FAQs

What is the difference between recreational and travel teams?

Recreational soccer is usually run through a school program, and is often where players get their first experience with the sport. All kids are placed on a team and receive equal playing time, often coached by parent volunteers.

Travel soccer is a competitive program. All are welcome to try out, not everyone will make a team. Furthermore, spots are not guaranteed from year to year. Players must try out each summer for their fall spot. Playing time is also not guaranteed, it is earned through hard work, practice and dedication.

What are typical season lengths?

There are two seasons in the sports year ~ fall and spring. Both fall and spring seasons last approximately three months, depending on each coach’s discretion as to when to start running practices. Fall season is typically Aug - Oct, and spring is typically March - May.

What are the financial obligations?

Shawnee Select registration fees are $305 per season. Additional costs would include uniforms (ordered every other year generally) and hotel costs, if your family decides to stay over on tournament weekends.

Where do you travel? How often?

Currently, all teams under Shawnee Select play in the Miami Valley Youth Soccer Association. Our teams typically travel to cities within a 90 minute drive south. There are generally an average of 8 games per season, with half of them being home and half away. Most teams also participate in 1-2 weekend tournaments per season in a variety of places.

When and where are try-outs?

Try-outs are held in June for the upcoming fall season at the Shawnee Athletic Complex. Sign up for our newsletter to be notified up upcoming try-out dates.
